wow! as a broke college kid, i wish there was a way to access books and movies as well as scientific articles that the new administration isn’t necessarily a fan of. man. If only there was a free and trusted vpn ( up to 10 gigs of downloadable data) to use in conjunction with an anonymizing router (also free up to 10 gigs) to safely, er, permanently borrow media in an untraceable way as well as share files. Man, what’s that browser that keeps your online activity anonymous? I’m awfully attached to firefox, personally. If only i had a browser extension that would throw a smoke screen over my browsing data while blocking ads at the same time.
what was i talking about? hmm. weird.
This is the last thing I’ll say about this bc I try to curate my blog to be a chill, relaxing space. But as someone who suffered a lot of panic and anxiety during and after the 2016 election:
Stop following the news.
I know you wanna be informed, and it’s OK to want to have a general idea of what’s going on. But you do not need to be THAT informed. Trust me. The news will report on every stupid little thing, much of which is speculation or will not affect you in the long run.
If you’re struggling with your mental health, it is OK to disengage from the news cycle - and from social media for that matter. Life will go on. You’ll find out the important stuff one way or another.
If you still really feel you need to check the news, try setting limits so you don’t get burnt out and start doomscrolling. My SO checks NPR’s front page once a day. He also does me the courtesy of asking if I wanna hear about a politics thing before bringing it up in conversation, so I can decide if I want to engage with it.
I know a lot of you are scared; I am too. But 99% of the time, following the news is just going to keep you in that heightened state of anxiety, and no one deserves to live like that. Just try to keep living your life and glance at the news every now and then.
Everyone, please take care. <3
I don’t want to find out about world events anymore
friendly reminder that “im worried about the election results because of the drastic impacts it will have not only worldwide, but also in my personal life”
and
“i should step offline and stop actively thinking about the election, because doomscrolling and worrying over the results will not change them, and instead will only cause me further pain and stress”
are two statements that CAN and SHOULD coexist.
i know that today is very stressful for everyone, both americans and non-americans (like myself), but worrying will NOT do any good. take care of yourself first and foremost. we can and will deal with the consequences of the election when the results are out.
step offline. get some water and a snack. watch a TV you like, or play a video game, or read a book. talk to someone you love. this is not going to be the end of the world. we cannot let this be the end of the world.
You doing ok?
the original context wasnt even for. This. but the way this is popping off right now i get it
I am terrified and utterly devastated at the election news, and the nightmare that all trans people, poc, immigrants, women and girls will be facing in the aftermath. the weight of knowing that the president-elect’s administration will not recognize or protect your identity and your rights is something no one should have to bear.
as a non american who’s country will still be affected by the election, I want to express my unwavering support and solidarity for everyone who is suffering right now. so many of my family and friends live in america and while I cannot begin to comprehend the depth of fear and the gravity of the situation you are in, I stand with you and I am here for you. I am so unbelievably sorry that you are having to endure this, and I want you to know that every act of resilience and courage is incredibly admirable. we see you, we hear you, and we will not let you be forgotten or silenced. I promise that I will do everything in my power to fight the hate and ignorance that threatens your well-being. we are all helpless to stop this, but whether it’s through advocacy, education, or simply being there to listen and offer comfort, I am here for you. remember that you are loved and valued beyond measure. your life is valuable, your identity is important, and your courage to live openly and authentically is staggering. your existence is not a political statement; and you have every right to live freely without fear of persecution or discrimination or your rights being taken away. one day you will live freely. do not stop fighting back.
